Anxiety Remedies - What Are Your Best Choices To Cure Anxiety Attacks
Today, there is much talk about all natural and alternative anxiety remedies, which are all very well and good, but sometimes, the anxiety disorder is just so severe that medication really is required. With medical advances in the last decade, there are so many medications to help treat different anxiety disorders, and the taboo has since been removed. There should be no shame in seeking medical attention to help regain control of your life.
For decades, the usual medications prescribed by physicians to treat anxiety disorders were known as benzodiazepines. This has recently changed and new medications have been added to the arsenal of medications which are now used as anxiety remedies. Depending on the severity of your anxiety disorder and your medical history, you and your physician will discuss what options you have as far as medications go. At that point, you may be prescribed a one-dose treatment or a regimen of doses over a period of time.
Instead of benzodiazepines, many physicians are now choosing to treat anxiety disorders with antidepressants. There is a group of antidepressants known as serotonin-reuptake inhibitors, known as SSRIs. These are typically used for initial treatment and are very effective as anxiety remedies since they exhibit minor side effects and are relatively non-addictive. In some cases, a combination of SSRIs and benzodiazepines is used to treat anxiety.
When prescribed antidepressants to treat an anxiety disorder, it is important to know that they do not "kick in" immediately, but take about two to four weeks to take effect. In some people, the effects could take as long as twelve weeks to appear. In this time, feelings of anxiety are usually increased, but once the medication begins working, vast improvements can be seen. These antidepressants, or SSRIs, work so effectively because they help increase serotonin levels in the brain, which is responsible for even mood.
Often, medication is not the only remedy used in treating anxiety. Usually, medication is prescribed as part of a treatment regimen that will typically include therapy with a counselor, relaxation techniques, and the medication. Each treatment regimen is dependant on the patient and his or her needs.
